Saturn (Shani) is the slowest planet in vedic astrology, it takes about two and a half years to fully cross one entire rashi and that is called Shani's dhaiya.
So when Shani enters the rashi before your janam rashi (i.e. the rashi in which your natal moon is placed) the sadhe saati begins. It takes approximately 2 and half year over that rashi then Shani comes over natal moon rashi and then it moves to the rashi after the natal moon rashi.
This whole prosses takes approximately 7 and half year, that is why it is known as SADHE SAATI.
